Cathedral Cove is one of the most iconic and breathtaking spots on the East Coast of the Coromandel Peninsula. With its towering cliffs, crystal-clear turquoise water, and soft white sand, it’s no wonder it’s at the top of so many travellers’ bucket lists. In summer, this famous beach draws visitors from around the world, and on a busy day, you might be sharing it with hundreds of other nature lovers. But with a little planning, you can experience Cathedral Cove at its most magical – and have it almost to yourself.
Recently, a lovely family from the US reached out to me while visiting friends in New Zealand. They wanted to capture their time here with a family photo session at Cathedral Cove – a place that would forever remind them of their Coromandel adventure. We worked together to plan a shoot that was relaxed, fun, and perfectly timed to avoid the crowds.
Most visitors use the Cathedral Cove Park & Ride from Hahei, which operates seasonally from December 1 to April 30. It drops you at the lookout, where you can start the scenic 45-minute walk to the beach. While beautiful, the walk can be challenging for little ones or grandparents, especially after a full day in the sun.
For families, I often recommend the Cathedral Cove Water Taxi. It’s faster, exciting for the kids, and means no tired feet at the end of the day. My clients booked a private charter so we could arrive after most visitors had left. We pulled up to an empty beach, with nothing but the sound of the waves and the warm evening light – absolute perfection for photos.
The water taxi uses sealegs amphibious boats, so you don’t even get your feet wet. It’s a little adventure in itself, and our three-year-old star of the day was grinning from ear to ear!
During our session, we made sure to capture the joy of the whole family – and I always sneak in a few portraits of Mum and Dad. Parents often focus on their children in family shoots, but it’s just as important to celebrate your connection as a couple. Your kids will cherish those images just as much.
Pro tip: To avoid the busiest times, plan your visit for late afternoon and either walk back as the sun sets or book a private water taxi charter. You’ll get softer light, fewer people, and a truly unforgettable experience.
If you’re visiting Cathedral Cove and would love to create your own beautiful memories here, I’d be honoured to capture them for you. As a local photographer, I can help plan the timing, guide you through the best spots, and make sure your family photos feel as natural and joyful as the moment itself. Get in touch!
