If you’re dreaming of a romantic photo session by the sea, Cooks Beach is such a magical place on the Coromandel Peninsula. As a Cooks Beach photographer, I’ve had the privilege of capturing love stories in this beautiful coastal spot. I must say, this one is truly unforgettable.

It was a quiet afternoon, with soft rain falling over the dunes and long wet grass. I was tucked away in the distance with my camera, hidden carefully so that the surprise wouldn’t be spoiled. At the heart of it all, Chanelle and Calvin were about to begin a brand new chapter in their love story.

The Story

These two first met in high school, and their bond has only grown stronger over the years. Calvin had carefully planned this moment with help from his sister, Sam. The plan was simple but perfect. Chanelle would be taken for a walk by her dad, where she would “accidentally” come across Calvin waiting. She had no idea he would be there! The look on her face when he got down on one knee was priceless.

From a distance, I couldn’t hear their words, but the emotions spoke louder than anything. Chanelle’s surprise quickly turned into happy tears, laughter, and of course, a heartfelt “YES!” Every detail was thought out. From a change of outfit to a bouquet of flowers, so the newly engaged couple could celebrate with a mini engagement photo shoot right after the proposal.

With about 20 minutes before the rain rolled in, we wandered along the beach, capturing relaxed, candid photographs. I always encourage couples to simply enjoy the moment – and Calvin and Chanelle did exactly that. Their joy and love shone through in every frame.
