For the past seven years, I’ve been behind the camera capturing families, weddings, and every kind of love and emotion under the sun. You might think that being a photographer means my own home is filled with beautiful family portraits. the truth is, it took me six years to convince my husband to book a proper family photo session! One day I’ll share that story in full.
So when Carly & Daniel from Wind & Waves Media reached out to me about swapping photo sessions somewhere on the Coromandel, I immediately said “Yes!” They’re a husband-and-wife wedding photography and videography team based in Texas, visiting New Zealand for the first time. My husband was away at the time, so they suggested a Mummy & Me photo session with my daughter – and I couldn’t have been more excited.
I chose Hot Water Beach for its unique, dreamy landscape. The sand dunes hold the sunlight for longer, creating that golden glow I love in photographs. I’d recently done an engagement session there and knew it would be perfect for our Mummy & Me shoot. Plus, it’s close to my home in Tairua – which meant we could keep the session short and sweet, just 20 minutes, perfect for young children.
If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that during family photography sessions, it’s the adults who need the most direction – not the kids! Children naturally fit into moments when they’re free to be themselves. Forcing them to smile or look at the camera often leads to shy or uncomfortable expressions. Instead, let the laughter, cuddles, and play happen naturally.
During our Mummy & Me photo session, I let my daughter take the lead while I followed the photographer’s prompts. Even with all my years of experience behind the lens, I realised how valuable it is to trust your photographer’s vision and just enjoy the moment.
Any Mummy & Me photo session should feel light, fun, and full of connection. These are the images you’ll treasure for years – the ones you’ll want to frame, hang in your home, and look back on as your little ones grow. If you’ve been thinking about booking your own, browse my family galleries and let’s create something beautiful together.
